NARAL Pro-Choice NH Hosts 39th Roe v. Wade Anniversary Celebration

Rep. Candace Bouchard to Receive ‘Champion for Choice' Award

Concord, NH—NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire hosted its annual community event on Wednesday evening to celebrate the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that granted women the right to choose abortion.

The event, “Faith In Choice: Celebrating the 39th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade,' featured Jon O'Brien, president of Catholics for Choice, the leading organization addressing sexual and reproductive rights from a standpoint of culture, faith and morality.

Faith leaders from across the state comprised the event's honorary committee co-chairs, who spoke briefly about the importance of showing broad support for women's choice among varied faith communities.

“To me and the Church I serve, and if I may so assert, to the God I serve, the right to live out the fullness of our humanity, the right to make informed, reasoned, and prayerful choices, is an indicator of our integrity as individuals and as a society. The right of choice is to be celebrated and preserved,” said Reverend William Exner of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Goffstown.

Over 150 supporters attended the event, including several legislators and candidates running for state office. “In this important election year we must demonstrate the power of New Hampshire's pro-choice majority,” stated Elizabeth Hager, chair of NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire's Political Action Committee and lobbyist for the organization. “This legislature has gone way too far in its efforts to send women back to the dark ages.”

The event was a fundraising initiative for NPCNH, raising over $20,000 to support its grassroots lobbying effort to defeat anti-choice legislation. The organization is currently tracking 11 legislative efforts in the New Hampshire House that seek to limit access to contraception, sexuality education or abortion.
