NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire Applauds House Defeat of Pharmacist Refusal Bill
Concord, NH – Today the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted down proposed legislation to grant pharmacists immunity from liability for refusing to dispense emergency contraception to women. NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire, the state’s leading grassroots organization dedicated to protecting reproductive rights in New Hampshire, cheered the House decision to defeat the bill. “The greater the access to emergency contraception, the smaller the number of women facing unintended pregnancy and the need for abortion,” said Liza Dube, Political Director for NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire. “When state’s limit access to emergency contraception by allowing pharmacists to refuse to fill valid prescriptions, more women risk facing unintended pregnancy and the difficult decisions that go along with it. It’s that simple.” “The same people who support pharmacist refusals for contraception oppose a woman’s right to choose abortion. Opposing abortion and opposing safe, effective ways to prevent unintended pregnancy just doesn’t make sense,” Dube said. “In light of current attempts in states across the nation to ban abortion completely, New Hampshire once again is a model of making strides towards accomplishing what should be a shared goal of putting prevention first.”
