Sold-Out Crowd Attends Event Supporting Reproductive Freedom

Posted: 05/05/2004

Portsmouth, NH – Just ten days after the largest pro-choice march in American history, New Hampshire participants in the March for Women’s Lives hope to build upon the momentum of the record-breaking rally for reproductive rights.

NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire’s 19th Annual Choice Chocolate Dessert Buffet & Auction, held at the Red Hook Brewery on Wednesday, May 5, was a reunion of sorts for many of the 2,000-plus March attendees from New Hampshire. It is NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire’s first major gathering of supporters since the Washington, DC March, and since pro-choice legislators defeated seven restrictions on abortion rights in the New Hampshire legislature.

Over 200 pro-choice supporters gathered to sample a mouthwatering array of hors d'oeuvres and chocolate desserts donated by the Seacoast area's finest bakeries, caterers, restaurants and chefs including Jumpin’ Jay’s Fish Café, Lindberg’s Crossing, The Blue Mermaid, the Friendly Toast and Ceres Street Bakery.

Attendees participated in a live benefit auction, bidding on varied and unique items including jewelry, artwork, massage therapy, weekend getaways and a South African Safari.

Laura Thibault, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire said, "Now more than ever, people who value privacy and our right to choose must stand up and be counted. Choice Chocolate is an evening of celebration but more importantly, an evening when pro-choice activists show their solidarity. Our message is clear; we are ready to take action to protect the right to choose for every woman in New Hampshire, and for the next generations of New Hampshire women."

Thibault added, "The overwhelming success of the March for Women’s Lives, which included over 2,000 people from New Hampshire, was just the beginning. Our greater goal for 2004 is to ensure that New Hampshire’s pro-choice majority has a strong presence at the polls this November and that the leaders elected are those who respect individual privacy."

A portion of the proceeds raised from the event will directly support the NARAL Pro-Choice New Hampshire PAC’s electoral efforts in to elect pro-choice candidates in targeted New Hampshire senate districts.
