Margaret Sanger's son was in my father's Columbia University Medical School classes. His name was periodically broadcast over the intercom, into the hallways, that he was "needed again to go to jail and bail out his mother." And the young medical students would cheer her, that she go on with her good cause. She worked to get diaphragms, via clinics, into the hands of New York City's poor women. This was illegal.
Our father told us that many immigrant women, especially, either died in childbirth with too many children and no prenatal care or died in botched, illegal abortions - leaving behind small and needy children, now with no mother.
John McCain should have learned by now that women, every day of their reproductive lives, have different health risks than men. But he hasn't paid attention or doesn't appreciate that fact. That disconnect shows in his choice of Sarah Palin for a running mate.
Palin and McCain have demonstrated that they are prepared to force their beliefs on others. Those of us who love freedom and family must continue to fight for reproductive rights just as Margaret Sanger did and cherish Roe v. Wade.
