Statement on Pattern of Violence

Dear Friends,

On June 4, I joined with more than 100 pro-choice supporters and health care providers gathered to honor Dr. George Tiller on the statehouse lawn in Concord.

On May 31, Dr. Tiller became the fourth doctor to be shot to death in the campaign of anti-abortion violence against providers and clinics.  Begun in 1976, this campaign has relied on murder, shootings, bombings, arson, butyric acid attacks, and anthrax threats for its tactics, according to the National Abortion Federation.

The most extreme incidents of this campaign have claimed these victims:

  • Dr. George Tiller shot and killed at his church in Wichita, Kansas, May 2009.
  • Dr. Barnett Slepian shot and killed in his home in Amherst, New York, October 1998.
  • Officer Robert Sanderson killed and Emily Lyons, a nurse, severely injured during a clinic bombing in Birmingham, AL, in January 1998.
  • Dr. Jack Fainman shot and injured in his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba in November 1997.
  • An unnamed physician shot at his home in Rochester, New York, October 1997
  • Dr. Hugh Short shot and injured in his home in Ancaster, Ontario, in November 1995.
  • Shannon Lowney and Leanne Nichols shot and killed and five others injured at two clinics in Brookline, Massachusetts in December 1994.
  •  Dr. Garson Romalis shot and seriously wounded in his home in Vancouver, British Columbia in November 1994.
  • Dr. John Bayard Britton and his escort, James Barrett shot and killed, and June Barrett shot and injured in front of a clinic in Pensacola, Florida, in July 1994.
  • Dr. George Tiller shot and injured at his clinic in Wichita, Kansas, in August 1993.
  • Dr. David Gunn shot to death in Pensacola, Florida, in March 1993.

This list is breath-taking but we in the pro-choice community will not be daunted.

Along with the courageous and capable health care providers in New Hampshire, we are proud to support women’s right to choose and access abortion care services.

Thank you so much for your continued support during these difficult times,
